GATE 2010

What is GATE ?


The Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) is an all-India examination administered and conducted in eight zones across the country by the GATE Committee comprising faculty from Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore and seven Indian Institutes of Technology on behalf of the National Coordinating Board - GATE, Department of Education, Ministry of Human Resources Development (MHRD), Government of India.

ELIGIBILITY FOR GATE

The following categories of candidates are eligible to appear in GATE :

1. Bachelor degree holders in Engineering/Technology/Architecture (4 years after 10+2) and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
2. Master degree holders in any branch of Science/Mathematics/Statistics/Computer Applications or equivalent and those who are in the final or pre-final year of such programmes.
3. Candidates in the second or higher year of the Four-year Integrated Master degree programme (Post-B.Sc.) in Engineering/Technology or in the third or higher year of Five-year Integrated Master degree programme and Dual Degree programme in Engineering/Technology.
4. Candidates with qualifications obtained through examinations conducted by professional societies recognised by UPSC/AICTE (e.g. AMIE by IE(I), AMICE(I) by the Institute of Civil Engineers (India)-ICE(I)) as equivalent to B.E./B.Tech. Those who have completed section A or equivalent of such professional courses are also eligible.

What is new in GATE 2010

1.
New Paper introduced in GATE 2010: Biotechnology (BT) has been introduced as an independent paper from GATE 2010.
2.
Common Component of General Aptitude (GA) introduced in GATE 2010: Each GATE paper shall have a common General Aptitude (GA) component carrying 15 marks from GATE 2010.
3.
Papers to be discontinued from GATE 2010 onwards:
* Due to introduction of an independent paper in Biotechnology (BT), the Biotechnology section in Life Sciences (XL) paper has been discontinued from GATE 2010.
* There will not be GATE 2010 examination in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PY) paper. For more information about the organization which will be conducting a GATE like examination for PY, the candidates are advised to visit GATE 2010 website from time to time.

ONLINE Examination for MN and TF paper:
* Computer based ONLINE examination for the paper MN will be held in Bangalore, Chennai, Delhi, Guwahati, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Mumbai, Roorkee on February 07, 2010 (Sunday) at 09.30 hrs – 12.30 hrs

Step 1: Procurement of Application Form

Candidate can obtain a packet containing:
* Offline Application Form
* Information Brochure
* Acknowledgment Card
* Envelope
from:
1. Designated Bank Branches corresponding to each zone on cash payment.
2. Zonal GATE Office by sending a request letter and TWO self-addressed slips along with a Demand Draft for appropriate amount.
3. Over the counter from Zonal GATE Office after handing over Demand Draft for appropriate amount.
Step 1: Select Payment Option:

* Online Payment: Online Payment is possible through HDFC bank payment gateway using Mastercard or Visa credit cards or debit cards of certain banks.
* Offline payment: Offline payment is possible through a demand draft payable at Kanpur in the name of "Chairman GATE, IIT Kanpur". Please obtain this prior to start of the online filling of the application.

Step 2: Obtain Digital Photo and Scanned Signature.

Candidates are advised to have a digital photograph and scanned signature prior to starting the filling of application and these should be uploaded when applying Online. Otherwise they have to submit it later.

Step 2: Obtain SC/ST/PD Certificate (if applicable)

SC/ST and Disability Certificate should be obtained from appropriate authority.

Step 4: Post/Submission

Duly filled-in Application Form with appropriate enclosures must be sent by Registered or Speed post to The Chairman, GATE of the Zone, where the candidate prefers (corresponding to the 1st Choice of Examination City) to appear for the examination, on or before Tuesday, November 03, 2009

OR

It can be handed over personally to respective Zonal GATE Office.
Step 5: Post/Submission

An application which is incomplete by not uploading the necessary documents can be completed by sending those documents by post along with a covering note that can be printed on the online site. All such documents must reach the GATE office at IIT Kanpur by November 3, 2009.

IIT JEE 2010 - Important Dates

Examination Schedule

April 11th (Sunday), 2010, Paper 1 – 09.00 – 12.00 hrs, Paper 2 – 14.00 – 17.00 hrs

Paper-1 and Paper-2 will each have separate sections in Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Both papers will be of objective type, designed to test comprehension, reasoning and analytical ability of candidates.

Syllabus for this examination will be available on the website of all IITs.

The candidate will have the option of submitting the application form either on-line or off-line

PATTERN OF IITJEE

Question Papers

There will be two question papers, each of three hours duration. Both the question papers would consist of three separate sections on Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics. Questions in these papers will be of objective type, which are to be answered on a specially designed machine-gradable sheet (ORS – Optical Response Sheet) using HB pencils only. Incorrect answers will be awarded negative marks.

Language and Font of Question Papers

Candidates can opt for Question Papers either in English or in Hindi. This option should be exercised while filling the application form. It cannot be changed at any later stage.

Visually impaired candidates, on request, will be provided with question papers with 20% enlarged font.

Calculating Aids

Use of log tables and any electronic calculating aids are NOT permitted in JEE-2009.

Aptitude Test for B.Arch. and B.Des.

Candidates called for counselling and desirous of joining the B.Arch. and B.Des. courses will be required to qualify in an Aptitude Test to be conducted at each counselling institute on June 11 and June 15, 2009. The test will consist of one paper of three hours duration – from 10:00 to 13:00 hrs. Candidates who fail to qualify in the Aptitude Test will not be eligible for admission to either B.Arch. or B.Des. courses. Question papers for aptitude test for B.Arch and B.Des will be in English only. The candidate should write the test only once, either on June 11 or June 15, 2009.
ELIGIBILITY FOR IIT JEE 2010

Eligibility: You must make sure that you satisfy all the eligibility conditions given below for appearing in JEE-2010

Date of birth: Candidate belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories must be born on or after October 01, 1985 and those belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must be born on or after October 01, 1980

Year of passing qualifying examination (QE): Must have passed the qualifying examination, namely, XII standard or any equivalent examination, after 1st October 2008 or in the year 2009 or will be appearing in 2010

Minimum percentage of marks in QE: candidates belonging to GE, OBC and DS categories must secure at least 60% marks and candidates belonging to SC, ST and PD categories must secure at least 55% marks in aggregate in the qualifying examination

Important notes: (i) You can attempt JEE only twice, in consecutive years. That means you should have attempted JEE for the first time in 2009 or will be appearing in 2010

(ii) If you have accepted admission after qualifying in JEE in earlier years by paying full fees at any of the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi or ISM, Dhanbad, you will not be eligible to write JEE at all, irrespective of whether or not you joined in any of the programmes

Reservation of seats: For SC and ST candidates, respectively 15% & 7.5% seats are reserved in each programme in all the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISM, Dhanbad. Some candidates belonging to these categories who do not qualify in JEE-2010, may be offered admission to the Preparatory course of one-year duration provided (i) seats are available, (ii) candidates satisfy minimum norms, and (iii) candidates have not undergone the preparatory course earlier. Candidates successfully completing the preparatory course will be offered direct admission to the first year in the academic year 2011-12. For OBC candidates belonging to non-creamy layer, 27% seats are reserved in each programme in all the IITs, IT-BHU, Varanasi and ISM, Dhanbad. Candidates belonging to this category are admitted on the basis of a relaxed criterion.

For candidates with physical disability (PD), including leprosy-cured candidates, and who are otherwise fit to pursue the course, 3% seats are reserved in each of the categories (viz. GE, OBC, SC and ST). Candidates in this category are also admitted under relaxed norms. In case the reserved seats are not filled, a limited number of PD candidates are admitted to a Preparatory course of one year duration on the basis of a further relaxation. Two seats in each institute are preferentially allotted to children of defence/paramilitary personnel killed or permanently disabled in action during war or peacetime operations (DS) and who qualify in the general category.
How to Apply for IIT Joint Entrance Examination ?

Application procedure: A candidate can submit application either on-line through internet or off-line through prescribed (OMR) application form.

(a) On-line: For on-line submission of applications, visit any of the websites given below and carefully follow the instructions given therein. The students can pay the application fee through credit and debit cards of major banks or through challan of selected banks. The reduced examination fee for on-line mode is Rs. 450/- for SC/ST/PD/female candidates and Rs. 900/- for all other candidates.

(b) Off-line: A candidate can buy an application form with Information Brochure from any one of the designated branches of banks by paying Rs. 500/- for SC/ST/PD/Female candidates (light green envelope) or Rs. 1000/- for all other candidates (light blue envelope). This includes the examination fees. The information brochure contains details regarding application procedure, syllabus of JEE, examination centres, and courses available at various institutions, counseling, fee structure and other relevant information about JEE-2010

(c) Help-line (only in IIT Madras zone): Those who do not have access to computers and internet can also apply on-line with reduced examination fees by visiting any of the forty approved ‘CMC help-line’ centres distributed all over the IIT Madras zone. B.Tech (Information and Communication Technology)

Eligibility: Candidates should be a pass in the 12th standard or its equivalent with Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry/Computer Science; be born on or after 01 October 1985; appear in AIEEE 2010 examination being conducted by CBSE on 25th April, 2010; submit a separate application to DA-IICT in the prescribed application form

Selection process: Short-listed candidates will be called for counseling at DA-IICT and selection for admission will be based on the All India rank of AIEEE 2010. Details are available at DA-IICT website


A limited number of seats will be offered through a separate channel called Direct Admission of Foreign and NRI students (DAFS) to Non-Resident Indians, foreign nationals and persons of Indian origin

How to apply: A candidate can submit an application either online (preferably) or offline. The application fee is Rs 1000/- (online) and Rs 1050/- if a candidate downloads the form and sends the hard-copy. In both cases, the draft needs to be sent by courier/registered post

Financial assistantships: Candidates admitted to M.Tech would be eligible to get Teaching Assistantship of Rs 7500/- per month. Candidates admitted to Ph.D program will be eligible for a stipend varying from Rs 12000/- to Rs 25000/- per month
